Irina Mikitenko and Thomas Goller drop out of World Championships
Leader of the World Rankings in the Women’s Marathon, Irina Mikitenko of Germany, has pulled out of the upcoming World Championships in Berlin.
„This is a major blow for us“, said German federation (DLV) sports manager Jürgen Mallow.
„Irina’s father has passed away recently. She has still tried to prepare well for the World Championships in the altitude training camp in Saint Moritz, but she did not manage to get in good enough shape. Therefore she has decided to withdraw from the championships.”
Mikitenko, winner of the last two London Marathons and last year’s Berlin Marathon, was top favourite for the world title.
Ulrike Maisch is now included in the German world cup marathon team.
Further bad news came for the German track fans; the national 400m hurdles champion, Thomas Goller dropped out of the world championships as well, due to a calf injury that he suffered at the international meeting in Cottbus.
