Vernon and Damen win British selection races for Albufeira

Andy Vernon won the senior men’s title and automatic selection for the Great Britain team going to the 2010 SPAR European Cross Country Championships with a victory at the McCain Liverpool Cross Challenge in Sefton Park, Liverpool, on Saturday.

Vernon, the 2008 under 23 silver medallist and 12th in the senior men’s race in Dublin 12 months ago, was in the leading pack from the gun but as the head of the race moved into the second small loop of three in a 9.8km course, Vernon took the lead alongside Mark Draper and Ryan McLeod held a slight advantage.

The senior women’s 8.1km race arguably looked on paper more predictable than the men’s but created its own surprise as the self-coached Louise Damen had her serious cross country race in almost two years and won in style.
