Uganda: Kipsiro Gold Raises More Questions

The 5, 000m gold Moses Kipsiro won at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique on Thursday should ideally be celebrated like a miracle.

Not long ago, the biggest Ugandan athlete today could have been down and out. His season started with complaints of persistent knee injuries prior to the World Cross Country Championships in Umbria, Spain in March eventually finishing 11th.

At that point, it was premature to write off the double Commonwealth long distance gold medalist from India last October. The inaugural IAAF Diamond League came knocking and redemption was possibly a matter of when and not if. A few unremarkable displays later, the calm athlete was suffering from typhoid.

When we all thought a dosage from a medical person would heal the star, the bombshell fell. A rival clan allegedly 'bewitched' him as they 'envied' his success. "They are using all means including juju (witchcraft) to finish me off," the runner said.
