Spanish president: Bayer's 8.71 was a measuring error!
Germany's Sebastian Bayer's "Beamonesque' long jump effort was clearly the best performance of the recently concluded European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torino.
But was it really that long?
This is seriously questioned by José María Odriozola, President of the Spanish Athletics Federation and IAAF Council Member, who said the result seemed to him 'incredible' and he had that feeling it was a measuring error.
"I was near the landing pit and saw that an official was making mistakes all day long by putting the measuring mark at wrong places," said Odriozola. "It was not a machine defect but a human error."
With the gold medal and the 8.71m European indoor record Bayer jumped up from the 13th to the 4th position in the latest edition of the All-Athletics World Rankings.
